Montessori perceived the miracle of language development as “a treasure prepared in the unconscious, which is then handed over to consciousness, and the child, in full possession of his new power, talks and talks without cessation.” Children go through a series of stages to acquire language.  They begin with auditory discrimination and quickly move to speech and vocabulary development. In this stage, they also develop symbol and sound recognition which leads to reading and creative writing.

Materials in a Montessori classroom are designed to teach children the intricacies of spoken and written language.
